Mental Health Resources & Frequently Asked Questions — Cygnet LCPC

The Cygnet Low-Cost Postgraduate Clinic (LCPC) is committed to making psychological support accessible to everyone in the Perth metropolitan area. Below you will find answers to common questions about our clinic, guidance on accessing low-cost psychology services in Western Australia, and information about what to expect when you begin therapy.

About the LCPC Program

What is the Low-Cost Postgraduate Clinic?

The Cygnet LCPC is a supervised practicum program that partners with Australian universities to offer final-year Master's and PhD psychology students a structured clinical placement. Practitioners at the LCPC are in their fifth or sixth year of study, provisionally registered with AHPRA, and working toward full registration as a psychologist. All sessions are conducted under the direct supervision of a senior clinical psychologist and Adjunct Associate Professor.

Who can access the LCPC?

The LCPC is open to adults and mature minors (16 years and older) across the Perth metropolitan area. The clinic accepts self-referrals as well as referrals from GPs, psychiatrists, school counsellors, allied health professionals, and other appropriate channels. You do not need a Mental Health Care Plan, a GP referral, or any prior psychology experience to access the service. Clients who have exhausted their annual Medicare Better Access sessions are warmly welcomed.

Is there a screening or triage process?

Yes. Every referral received by the LCPC is individually reviewed and triaged by the supervising clinical psychologist to assess suitability for the program. If a presentation is assessed as too complex, involves significant risk, or requires a level of intervention beyond the scope of the LCPC, the client will be referred to a more senior Cygnet practitioner or an appropriate external service. This process protects both clients and practitioners, ensuring every person receives the right standard of care.

Costs & Access

How much do sessions cost?

Individual psychotherapy sessions are $50 per session for employed adults, or $20 per session for Health Care Card holders and pensioners. Full cognitive assessments (WAIS-IV, including written report) are available for $450. A formal cognitive and adaptive behaviour assessment is $650 — approximately $2,500 less than standard private rates. Group therapy programs are currently free for a limited time across a structured 10-week program.

Are there session number limits?

No. Unlike the Medicare Better Access to Mental Health Care program, which caps sessions per calendar year, the LCPC places no limit on the number of sessions a client may attend. Therapy continues for as long as it is clinically appropriate and beneficial for the client. This is particularly valuable for clients managing chronic conditions, complex life circumstances, or long-term mental health goals.

When is the clinic open?

The LCPC operates in line with university semesters, typically running from February to June and July to November each year. Limited availability may exist outside these periods depending on individual practicum arrangements. The clinic is currently open — to enquire about an appointment, email lcpc@cygnetclinic.com.au or complete the referral form on our home page.

Therapy & Treatment

What therapy approaches are used?

LCPC practitioners are trained in a broad range of evidence-based therapeutic modalities and tailor their approach to each individual client. Commonly used frameworks include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), schema-informed therapy, mindfulness-based interventions, psychodynamic approaches, and person-centred counselling. Where appropriate, practitioners may also draw on breath-work and autonomic-based strategies for emotional regulation. Treatment always begins with thorough assessment and collaborative case formulation.

What conditions can be treated at the LCPC?

Our practitioners work with a wide range of presentations, including anxiety disorders (generalised anxiety, social anxiety, health anxiety, OCD-related conditions), depression and mood disorders, relationship and interpersonal difficulties, emotional regulation challenges, grief and loss, life transitions, occupational stress and burnout, couples issues, and neurodiversity-related concerns. Cases involving significant clinical complexity or acute risk are referred to more senior practitioners to ensure appropriate care.

Will my sessions be supervised?

Yes. All LCPC practitioners receive intensive individual and group supervision from the clinic's managing director. With client consent, sessions may be audio- or video-recorded for supervision purposes, and selected cases may be reviewed at peer supervision meetings attended by senior clinical psychologists. This supervisory model frequently means that LCPC clients benefit from a greater level of expert clinical oversight than they would typically receive in standard private practice.
