Low-Cost Cognitive & Psychological Assessments in Perth, Western Australia

The Cygnet Low-Cost Postgraduate Clinic (LCPC) offers comprehensive cognitive and psychological assessments to adults and older adolescents across the Perth metropolitan area at a fraction of standard private practice fees. Assessments are conducted by provisionally registered psychologists completing their final year of an accredited Master of Clinical Psychology or Master of Applied Psychology (Clinical) program, under the direct supervision of the clinic's managing director — an Adjunct Associate Professor and registered clinical supervisor.

What Assessments Are Available?

The LCPC administers the WAIS-IV (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Fourth Edition), the gold-standard instrument for measuring adult intellectual functioning. A full cognitive assessment includes a clinical interview, standardised test administration, scoring and interpretation, and a comprehensive written report suitable for use by GPs, psychiatrists, educators, employers, and funding bodies.

For clients requiring a more thorough evaluation, the clinic also offers a combined cognitive and adaptive behaviour assessment. This option pairs the WAIS-IV with a standardised measure of adaptive functioning, providing a fuller picture of an individual's cognitive profile and everyday functional capacities. This is particularly useful where there are concerns about intellectual disability, neurodevelopmental conditions, or the impact of acquired brain injury on daily living.

Pricing & Affordability

A full cognitive assessment including written report is available for $450. A formal cognitive and adaptive behaviour assessment is $650 — approximately $2,500 below standard private rates in Western Australia. This pricing model exists because the LCPC is a supervised training clinic: practitioners are completing their postgraduate clinical placements, and the reduced fees reflect the educational nature of the service rather than any compromise in clinical quality.

Every assessment is individually supervised and the written report is reviewed by the managing director prior to release. This means clients benefit from the combined expertise of both the provisional psychologist and a senior clinical supervisor — a level of oversight rarely available in standard private practice.

Who Can Benefit from a Cognitive Assessment?

Cognitive assessments can be valuable for adults seeking clarity about their intellectual strengths and weaknesses, as well as those navigating diagnostic questions. Common reasons for referral include suspected intellectual disability, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) evaluations that require cognitive baseline data, clarification of learning difficulties, and assessment of cognitive changes following acquired brain injury, neurological illness, or prolonged substance use.

Assessments may also support applications for university or workplace accommodations, NDIS access requests, Centrelink disability support, and legal or vocational matters where objective cognitive data is required. Due to high demand and the time-intensive nature of assessment, referrals are accepted only where a valid clinical rationale has been established during the intake and triage process.

How to Request an Assessment

The LCPC accepts self-referrals and referrals from GPs, psychiatrists, allied health professionals, and other appropriate sources. No Mental Health Care Plan is required. To request a cognitive assessment, email lcpc@cygnetclinic.com.au or complete the referral form on our home page. A supervising clinician will review your enquiry, confirm suitability, and contact you to schedule an initial appointment.

Assessments are conducted at our Fremantle clinic (109 Marine Terrace, Fremantle WA 6160) and our Midland clinic (Suite 33, 6 Keane Street, Midland WA 6056). The clinic operates in line with university semesters, typically February to June and July to November, with limited availability outside these periods.
